The Kinect sensor is a very versatile piece of technology. Basically it is a revolutionary way of providing user input to technology and because of that can be implemented anywhere where user input might be needed. Kinect started solely for the Xbox as a means of gaming, but we’ve seen with the new Xbox Dashboard that it works very well as a way to navigate through a user interface.
Then Microsoft made the logical step to bring out a Kinect Sensor for Windows, allowing developers to create both gaming and non-gaming applications for Windows that make use of Kinect. And now Microsoft is making the next step regards to bringing Kinect to Windows: They are going to integrate Kinect in laptops!
Kinect in your laptop
According to a report on thedaily, Microsoft is testing laptop prototypes that have a built-in Kinect sensor. These laptops feature the three Kinect lenses where you would normally find the ordinary webcam, as well as a set of LED’s under them. These laptops are running Windows 8 (the Metro interface of Windows 8 is absolutely perfect for Kinect) and were made by Asus.
This move by Microsoft is pure genius because the Kinect sensor is quite big and not really something you want to go carry around with your Laptop. Having a sensor built-in solves that problem and will always give you access to motion controls and voice recognition.
If Microsoft gets their way soon every computer will be controllable by either a mouse, keyboard, touchscreen or…Kinect! We’ll see how this turns out.
